Corten Steel Sheet

Corten steel is a weathering steel designed to develop a distinctive rust-coloured surface when exposed to suitable outdoor wet and dry conditions.

Unlike ordinary untreated steel, Corten develops a more stable oxide layer, commonly known as a patina, which helps slow further atmospheric corrosion in suitable environments.

We stock Corten steel sheet in a range of thicknesses and sizes, with custom cutting available to your required length and width, subject to available parent sheet dimensions, stock and cutting limitations.

How Will My Corten Steel Arrive?

Important: Corten steel is supplied unweathered. Your sheet will not normally arrive with the finished orange or brown appearance commonly seen in completed Corten projects.

When first supplied, the material may appear grey, dark grey or metallic and may show normal manufacturing, handling or storage marks.

The characteristic orange and brown weathered appearance develops naturally after exposure to suitable outdoor wet and dry cycles.

How Does Corten Steel Weather?

Exposure to moisture begins the oxidation process, initially producing orange and reddish-brown tones. Repeated wet and dry cycles gradually darken and stabilise the surface, creating the distinctive Corten steel patina.

The exact colour, texture and speed of weathering cannot be guaranteed and will vary depending on factors such as moisture, temperature, humidity, airflow, location and installation conditions.

Areas that remain permanently wet, sheltered or unable to dry properly may weather differently from fully exposed surfaces.

Important Corten Weathering Information

Weathering notice: During the early stages of weathering, rust-coloured water and surface residue may run from the steel and can stain nearby materials.

This can affect paving, concrete, stone, brickwork, render, timber and other surrounding surfaces. Drainage, positioning and nearby materials should therefore be considered carefully when installing Corten steel.

London Metal Store cannot guarantee the exact final colour or appearance because natural weathering depends on the environment in which the material is installed.
