At London Metal Store, we supply mild steel sheet in standard sheet sizes or cut to your required dimensions for fabrication, repairs, panels, construction and general metalworking applications.
Mild Steel Sheet
Mild steel, also known as low carbon steel, contains a relatively low percentage of carbon compared with higher-carbon steels.
It is widely used because it offers a practical combination of strength, workability and affordability. Mild steel can be cut, drilled, folded, welded and fabricated for a wide variety of commercial and general engineering applications.
We stock mild steel sheet in a range of thicknesses and sizes. Sheets can also be cut to size to your required length and width, subject to available parent sheet dimensions, stock and cutting limitations.

Mild Steel Sheet Properties
Mild steel sheet offers a useful combination of strength, versatility and ease of fabrication.
Key characteristics include:
- Good strength
- Easy to cut and drill
- Suitable for welding
- Good formability
- Magnetic
- Suitable for folding and general fabrication
- Can be painted, powder coated or otherwise finished
- Suitable for a wide range of commercial and general-purpose applications
Mild steel does not have the same natural corrosion resistance as galvanised or stainless steel and may require an appropriate protective finish depending on its intended use and environment.
Mild Steel Sheet Finish
Mild steel sheet is supplied in its normal unfinished condition unless otherwise stated in the product options.
The surface may show normal manufacturing, handling or storage marks.
Untreated mild steel can develop surface rust when exposed to moisture and air. This is different from Corten weathering steel and should not be considered a protective decorative patina.
Where corrosion resistance or a consistent finished appearance is required, an appropriate primer, paint, powder coating or other protective treatment should be considered.
If surface appearance is particularly important for your project, please contact our sales team before ordering.
Mild Steel Sheet Cut to Size
Our cut-to-size mild steel sheet service allows you to order mild steel sheet to your required length and width, subject to available parent sheet dimensions and applicable cutting limitations.
Ordering mild steel sheet cut to size can help:
- Reduce material waste
- Save fabrication time
- Reduce additional cutting on site
- Make smaller sections easier to handle
- Provide material closer to your required dimensions
Additional fabrication services, including folding and welding, may also be available depending on your requirements.
Please contact our team before ordering if additional processing is required.
Common Uses of Mild Steel Sheet
Mild steel sheet is commonly used for:
- General fabrication
- Vehicle and body repairs
- Enclosures
- Panels and covers
- Door reinforcement
- Brackets and components
- Light fittings
- Construction and building work
- Industrial fabrication
- Equipment panels
- General engineering projects
Its versatility and ease of fabrication make mild steel one of the most widely used sheet metal materials.
Working With Mild Steel Sheet
Mild steel can be cut, drilled, welded, folded and formed using suitable fabrication equipment.
It is commonly used for projects that will later be painted, powder coated or otherwise finished.
The most suitable thickness and finish will depend on the strength, forming and appearance requirements of your project.
If you are unsure which thickness is suitable, contact our sales team before ordering.
